Welcome to Course on News Editing 2006

Hi Folks,
Welcome to my blog on News Editing created and used for a course on News Editing being offered by me to the First year students studying MA Communication (2006-2008). We can use it for sharing our ideas, resources and tutorials etc.
To begin with I post the syllabus approved by the BOS of MSU Commn.


4.News Editing (4 credits)

Objectives: This course aims to train the students to become adept copy editors, to strip wordiness out of texts, organize poorly structured articles, clean copy of grammatical errors, learn about the editing process, discuss style variations, follow a clear style and identify "holes" or lack of balance in articles.

UNIT1:Principles of news processing, newspaper organization, newsroom, assignment, log book, stylebook and the basics of editing.

UNIT2:Techniques and skills of news processing in the electronic era, news flow management, news judgment, objectivity, accuracy, usage, attribution, completeness, treatment, story line and word processing skills.

UNIT3:Genres and techniques of headline writing, types and functions of headlines, headline vocabulary, structure of a good headline, polishing the headline, subheads, standing and stock heads.

UNIT4:Editing feature articles and special reports.

UNIT5:Workshop: Students must edit and headline at least 10 stories during the course of the workshop submit them for external valuation and viva.
